Lapis Lazuli Bowl
At Marcello Andres Ceramics, gatherings around the table are important to us. Shared time, shared conversations, and shared meals foster togetherness—our Lapis Lazuli Bowl helps do just that. Divvy up a citrusy green garden salad or ladle up heaps of tomato-sauced pasta.
Our Lapis Lazuli Bowl doesn’t have to be filled with food to be full of meaning.
This glaze is inspired by the metamorphic rock lapis lazuli found in Chile (where Marcello’s family is from), Egypt, and a small number of countries around the world. Its use in art dates back to northeastern Afghanistan in 7000 BC, through the Renaissance, well into the 1800s and beyond. Due to the rarity and high cost of lapis-derived pigment “ultramarine,” paintings touched by this color were considered a luxury and a symbol of royalty and divinity. Paintings using ultramarine include “The Starry Night” by Van Gogh (1889) and “Girl with a Pearl Earring” by Vermeer (1665).
Today, we use synthetic blue pigments, including the ones used in the glaze for this bowl.
